Spotlight on the TERC’s Instructional Library

Meet our TERC Library! One small space PACKED with a wealth of resources ready for you.
At first glance, the TERC library may seem modest. However, our space-saving shelves are home to more than 17,000 items. Let’s start with answers to your most-frequent questions:

Q. What types of resources are available for us?
   We have a wide variety of items for you to explore, including:
Puppets: The TERC has more than 75 puppets available to check out to use with children in your classroom. Puppet play is a favorite! It’s fun AND it benefits young children’s learning and development.
word cloudEducational journals: We have several different TYPES of journals.
·        Juried periodicals are ideal for use in research papers.
·        The TERC’s historical collection of “Mailbox” and “EveryDay TLC” magazines provide seasonal lesson-planning activities and ideas great for bulletin-board displays.
·        “Kids Discover” magazines focus on individual topics great for classroom discussion, planning and visual aids.
Trade books: The TERC library resources are geared for preschool - 8th grade audiences. Our children’s literature section includes primary, intermediate and young adult materials. We also have a large collection of Big Books ideal to use in shared-reading experiences.
Curriculum materials: The TERC provides patrons a selection of text books and kits. Since many of the resources are donations, the kit components may vary. Kits may include teacher’s guides, student editions, resource materials and/or manipulatives. These items can be used as resources in developing lesson plans. In some classes, students practice reviewing curriculum materials for content and resources. These type of resources could be of special benefit to the home-school community where curriculum materials could be costly.
Lesson-planning materials: The TERC library’s many items provide teachers and students with ideas to create lesson plans. These type of resources are located throughout the library and assist students in planning developmentally-appropriate lessons based on ODE (Ohio Department of Education) standards.
Manipulatives and Games: Available to patrons are a wide selection of materials that provide gross motor and small motor hands-on learning. Items include: board games, blocks, hula hoops, cuisenaire rods and boards and much more.

Q. How can patrons access information about the materials in the library?

   In the Center, there is a designated computer for students to access the library system. Staff is available to assist with topic searches. At home, patrons may access the library through Destiny Quest at https://auelyria.follettdestiny.com. Using Destiny Quest is easy and the list of items placed into the BookBag can be printed for easy lesson-plan reference.

Q. How can a patron check out the library resources?
   Visit the TERC and complete a library-card form. A valid LCCC ID card - obtained from the Bass Library - is required for your free TERC library card!

Q. Can I reserve resources?
   Absolutely! Reserving library materials can be done easily in two ways:
Visit the library; find your items; and ask the staff to hold them for you. If a resource is not available at the moment, the staff can put a hold on any requested materials. When the items are available, you’ll be notified via the email/phone you provided. 
Call the TERC to request specific materials.

Q. Are there any rules for using the library?
   Yes! There are two basic rules for using the library:
·        NO children are allowed in the Center.
·        NO food or drink is permitted in the shelf areas.

Q. Who can benefit from TERC library resources?
   Our primary focus is to provide instructional resources to Teacher Education Students in the college’s Early Childhood and Elementary Education programs. The TERC resources are available to all area educators. Many of our patrons come from public and private schools. Scout leaders; vacation and summer school teachers; day care providers; home-school parents; and others have found our resources beneficial.

Q. How is the library organized for patrons to find resources?

   Our library resources are organized in a bookstore fashion. Items are categorized by topic and subject matter rather than by the Dewey Decimal system. This system is beneficial to students looking to create lesson plans.

Q. What if the TERC doesn’t have the resources I want?
   Some of the resources available at the Center are items requested by our patrons. If you have an idea - we welcome your input! Tell a staff member or leave your request in our “Suggestion Box” located at the Circulation desk.
